Ultima Thule - Musica Atmospherica - Ambient Music Radio - 2MBS-FM
One of the longest running and arguably best ambient progammes available on radio and as podcast. I have to admit I've never listened to it live (way past my bedtime) although I used to catch The Power Spot when it was being broadcast. Instead I religiously download and save the podcasts.
Each show runs for an hour and a half and often follows a theme or at least the tracks share some connection. Instead of some of the new age audio kitsch that is around, a lot of the music on Ultima is truly ambient with long running tracks that are sometimes challenging listening. If you enjoy ambient, down tempo with the occaisional excursions into indian, soundtracks, and the middle ages then go to the Ultima Thule website and download the podcasts, you won't be disappointed.
Subway Bhaktis - SITA RAM
Devotional music has come a long way since the recordings of half a dozen devotees droning around a microphone and harmonium. Written by Nyck Jeanes and Rachel Zinman, Sita Ram is no exception. This is a smooth and polished recording featuring traditional devotional chants and mantras, set to a contemporary sound. Interspersed between the musical tracks are short sound bites from train stations tying the whole into the subway bhakti theme. One minor complaint is that I felt the one or two tracks in English broke up the overall flow of the set.
The production by Kamal Engels is crisp and clean and the CD is nicely designed and packed with lyrics and line notes. An Australian devotional offering that will please modern day Bhaktis.
